Merry Tiller Help
« on: August 27, 2006, 21:49 »
Hi. I have just joined this site. I am now the proud owner of a merry tiller which i bought second hand with loads of spare attachments. However i belive that i have a oil leak on the rotor drive at the bottom near the tines.

I was using this today and it was working fine but then the gears did not change right and the tines stop moving for me. My qiestions are as follows and would appreciate any help possible.

1. where in London preferably north london can i get this machine looked at

2. does anyone know any thing about this machine

3. what oil do i need to but to put in for the drive gear thing.

Help please as i really like this machine and have wanted one since i got my plots two months ago.

Many thanks

Peter

The manual for it is on this site - downloadable pdf or you can buy the pdf on cd from some bod on ebay for £2.50 (did he download it from here?)

Yellow pages, garden equipment suppliers - telephone around. You won't have too much problem finding one who knows Merry Tillers.

Enjoy the best rotovator ever made :)

is this a call for help i hear?
sounds to me as if you have either snapped a chain, or a drive pin (MT3779). both are found in the drive case. the drive pin is used so that it will shear in two if a very hard item is found in the ground, but they will snap just to be a pain every now and then just when you dont need it to happen.
the gearbox takes 1 pint of SAE30 oil, which will always leak out of the bottom oil seal as the bushings become worn with age.
having said that they are great machines!
as for getting it fixed, any lawnmower repiar specialist should be able to do it, expect air to be sucked though front teeth at the same time the chin is rubbed thoughtfully, age will be mentioned  along with lack of parts.
ripost with the fact that all pitches of chains are still made, a roll pin is just a roll pin and have they never heard of instant gasket? :D
all the best

theres not much more i can say about it really. very difficult to diagnose a problem in cyberspace. unfortunately i am going on holiday at the end of the week so i cant do much in the short term. if you like you could private message me and we could talk on the phone, i might be able to put you in the right direction.
all the best

Just to give you all an update. I am taking this machine to the Newbury Showground where there is an old boy of 84 who is looking forward to taking it apart and reckons from my description he knows what is wrong. It turned out to be a merry tiller titan with reverse gear.I will update further next week and hopefully it will be a runner again

We're all awaiting the next episode with bated breath - how did you get from Barnet to Newbury and the ancient mechanical genius?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

well hello there.I am a live and so is my merry tiller.
Well firstly me sorry folks between pc probs and me being away I am sorry that i have not been online.

well i master the m25 and avoided the aliens but the tiller has come back just like new this week.

Do not ask me how he did it but he did. After many phone calls to the following

American musem in Bath. The garden machine society and various people suggested by them I managed to track down a complete titan chaincase and then called th eguy at newbury who told me that he had actually got a gear selector.
So off i went to collect the machine complete with new oils seals a clean up tighten handles but most important a new working reverse gear.
just had it on th eplot this afternoon and boy what a babe.

Its greEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

It took time but teh wait paid off.

Will be on th eplot at the weekend as I now have so much to do. will update again soon. Thanks to all who suggested and commented hope ye are well speak soon

Regards Peter
