Fir tree branches; What do I do with them?
« on: March 30, 2012, 19:02 »
My new allotment has come complete with a large rubbish bin  made of 8 pallets which is chock full of old bramble and bits of fir tree and lumps of concrete. I think someone took advantage of the plot being vacant to shove all their rubbish in it and it was probably previously a compost heap as there appears to be some good compost underneath all the rubbish.

I'd like to avoid having to take it all to the tip in the car and the site doesn't get skips very often. Can I burn the fir and bramble? Or if I cut it into tiny bits will it turn into compost?

If you can burn, I would as neither will compost very nicely.

Make sure the stuff is fully dry before you burn it or you will receive a letter from Env Health warning you about making a statutory nuisance - if I recall correctly you have residential accommodation around the plots and someone is bound to get grumpy / report you.

York council bonfire guidance is here.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

thanks. it's bone dry at present. I've just ordered one of those fire bins from Wilkinson's so it doesn't get out of control and take out the whole site lol.
