Sprouting potatoes
« on: November 10, 2009, 09:55 »
This is the first year that we've had a big potato crop, and we've stored em in the dark, in the cellar.

But they are all sprouting like mad  :(

We don't want to treat them, what can I do to slow them down ?
Are they too warm ?

I'm not an expert by any means but I think they like to be kept dark & cool but on saying that some of our potatoes have started to sprout too  one of our main crop is fine the other two varieties are sprouting, we just go through them periodically & rub off the shoots.

I had some Kestrel spuds that i found had started chitting last week.
I told an old hand at my allotment and he asked if he could have them to plant in his greenhouse for cosumption in February........he was made up and couldn't thank me enough.

It could be they weren`t dried properly before storing. A way to prevent this is to store them in boxes, layered in DRY peat or sand. :D

Break the sproust off tode.  Check them frequently and just rub them off.  The autumn has been so warm that they think it's spring  ::)

Thanks, all.  Yes, it has been quite warm, and we've got nowhere that's cooler than the cellar.

I hadn't really planned to spend my Wednesday sprout-rubbing, but there you go.   :(
