As a child we seemed to have lots of Doodahs and thingamajigs.    Never could get Mum to commit.  Her answer always was "Oh you know, that over there"

We get customers who come in the shop and ask for the thingamajig that goes on the washing machine, or the whatsit that turns the water off.  It's like 20 questions sometimes trying to work out what they mean.

We always had trouble finding our dooberries and whatchamacallits.  They were often found hiding under the thingymabob.

Good afternoon everyone,  in my crabfat rigger life I was always using two or three 'subsitute' words.  One was 'A cow 'ide knock stick', - hide faced hammer, or a skoof, anything where the name could not be brought to mind.

Hello I found out what a thingamajig was  when I was 16 and just started college,i told my Grandad that hedge maintenance wad part of the course,he said I could borrow his thingsmajig if I didnt break it ,it wad hung up in the shed with his hedging gear it was his ball hook at least that's what I think he was referring to,but I couldnt have the left handed bill hook   jezza

Good morning everyone,

The navy use a grease the same colour as the uniform of the RAF, they call this grease "crabfat" hence the 'nickname' for we Brylcream boys. But of course I cannot tell you what we called "The Mateloties"!!

Look at any aircraft and remove the 'dashboard' and engines everything else is the responsibility of the 'riggers', from the early days of flying where the ground staff 'rigged' the wires between the byplane wings.  Responsible for everything from emptying the thunderboxes to replacing wings/tail assembly etc and servicing all the components that make the thing fly.

Other aircraft trades have nicknames, electricians are usually sparkies, electronics are usually faries, engine bashers - sumpies (just has to be) and the armourers - plumbers, (they deal with lengths of pipe)!
