we have a 3 year old bed that is giving us very poor shoots of pencil thin twigs any ideas please

according to my rhs book on propagation you can split crowns so maybe you should do this but i think autumn wd be the best time when it has died back

You do need to feed the bed yearly with some rotted manure and a bit of lime.

Is the bed well drained?
If it's too wet it can cause them to crop poorly as thr roots will be being suffocated so to speak.
Also as Trillium said they need a yearly feed/mulch with either compost or manure.

If it's seed grown then you've got a couple of years yet probably.... I'm hoping to get my two-year olds out of pots and into the ground this year then I might be able to crop them in a couple of years but more likely three.... unless they have a great year this year and I might get a single picking next year...
