Advice please on removing grass.
« on: April 03, 2009, 12:48 »
So far the cats are winning in the Gardener v's Ninja Mutant Cats from Hell.

They have eluded all cat scarers that we have bought, sonic, water and light.  Immune to all manner of Market and kitchen products and eBay bought items.

So, we are reluctantly looking and giving up on our little 2mx3m bit of grass and concreting it over.  What i wondered was, is there a cheaper or easier alternative?

Apparently, Lincoln do not have green bins, so we will have to think of a way to dispose of our top soil ourselves.  We do not have a car nor access to one and hiring a skip will cost in excess of £150, so we are short on options. All advice taken on board!

You've probably already tried this but have you covered the area with netting to stop the cats getting on it for a while ? just to encourage them to find a new place to use.

I'm having problems with next doors moggys at the moment I've also tried everything and Im now resorting to netting in the hope they move on.

Yep tried netting too, doesn't appear to stop them at all.  If they can not get too the grass, they just go on the paving stones.

Advertise it on freecycle, if you're lucky you may get someone that will come and dig it up and cart it off for you :)

My partner shared your mutual hatred of cats, and we have tried a number of different things.
the most successful have been

>putting down cayenne pepper (which is great until it inevitably rains)

>"Cat Mint is a really strong smelling palnt that they steer clear of (although it does stink like strong skunk!) but it works!

>Jayes Fluid - same as cayenne really

the best has been the pea shooter that my nan recommends! a pack of Leo's Peas, and a week of persistant pea shooting, and they soon learn to steer clear!
Life is a Garden...........................................Dig it!

I love cats, I just hate the ones that are not cared for or litter trained by their irresponsible owner! (The man next door who has 5 or 6 of them)

I aquired some more Mothballs, different ones, and they have so far worked for 6 days.  Then, one of his damn cat's happily walked into our garden, through the gate I had put Trellis on to stop them getting in, straight past the sprinkler, past the sonic thingy, ignored the security light and proceeded to perch her bum over my newly planted Raspberry cane (the pot not the cane itself)

I have never seen my other half move so fast as he unlocked the back door and ran down the garden towards the now terrified cat.

Hopefully she will get the message and tell all her friends about the scary man that runs at you at 110mph when you are trying to toilet in his garden!

Get a water pistol.  I foolishly agreed to my wife getting a cat and the only thing the stupid thing would pay any attention to was getting a right soaking from one of those high powered pressure numbers  :D

Again, not possible unless I stay up all night with a torch.  Not really something i can do with a toddler who will be up and tearing around during the day so I kinda need my sleep.

I already have 5 of them plants.

Explain to the guy next door that if he'd like to do something about it, you won't speak to environmental health about it. If you have a toddler who goes outside in the cat poo, then there is a potential health risk.

Already spoke to Enviromental Health, they said there is nothing they can do, even though I stressed that (at the time) I was pregnant and also had a 2yr old running around.

Next door offers to come and collect the poo... but I do not want him in my garden every day leering at my washing, besides, that is not the point, he should litter train his damn cats!

Why should I have to put up with their stink every day meaning I can not even use the garden that I pay rent for?

... sorry... I keep getting really angry about this whole thing.

That is understandable  :( , is your garden fenced off and could you put up some really wobbly trellis that may put them off? I really can't think of any other suggestions other than turning the hosepipe on them every time you see one in the garden.
