Title: Hawthorne... is it safe?
Post by: violet on June 15, 2010, 17:10
We have a huge hawthorne tree where our hens and ducks are ...so I am sure they eat the leaves from time to time.  However we are cutting some of it down (it is taller than our house) and wondered whether it is safe to put some of the branches down for the girls to play on/eat?  Don't want them to overdose on whatever is in hawthorne!

Not sure about chooks but I have read humans can eat the leaves / flowers and fruit.  We have a large Hawthorn too and I was trying to decide what to do with it.

The only problem i can see is if something spooked the hens and they went into panic and flap about mode you might get some damage from the thorns.
Haws are good bird food. :)
