Frozen seeds?
« on: February 14, 2021, 08:56 »
Got a few packets of seeds from Lidl, but just found them in the freezer with the bread  Any ideas if they will germinate after this? I know some seed banks freeze seed to store it. Seeds were:

Peas
French beans
Carnations
Courgettes
Beetroot

Like you say, they should, because seedbanks keep them frozen, for long-term storage - but I'd have doubts about the French beans and courgettes
Perhaps try 1 or 2 seeds, of each, before assuming they will?

I'd say they should be ok as long as they froze quickly. I'd defrost them inbetween sheets of kitchen towel to minimise the amount of water on their surface as the ice melts.

If you are checking as described, take a paper towel, moisten it, pace the seeds on top, close the bag. Set aside somewhere it won't be discarded, check daily toe see if the seed has sprouted.

My guess is that many of those seeds should survive and will sprout.

Will try and sprout one of the courgettes in the airing cupboard before deciding if I need to buy new seed. Thanks all.

Well, the verdict is in. Peas, beans and carnations all seem fine, but predictably the courgettes show no signs of life and more surprisingly, the beetroot. May just throw some beetroot in a pot as it may have been too hot for them in the airing cupboard.
