As a newbie - are there any easy and tasty tom varieties you can recommend  that I can plant in the beds - I don't have greenhouse or cold frame.

Hi,

I grow my tomatoes from seeds every year.  I start inside (my conservatory, not heated) till they are 15-20cm then I put them out side in beds leaving 30-40 cm between them.  Actually, I have put some out yesterday.  I have done extremely well the past few years.  Took some pics and I'll try to post them, if I know how .

I think it a little early for putting tomatoes outside, I'll be waiting another 6 weeks. The ground temp here last night fell to -0.6C. That would have seen any off.

Over the last few years I've gown outside the varieties I would have grown inside. They'e all done well - until blight struck. Alicanate, Harbinger, Alisa Craig, Shirley, Gardener's Delight to name but a few.

I'm trying 5 different other ones this year, one of which is "Tamina" which is supposed to have an excellent flavour es[especially when grown outdoors. I cannot speak from personal experience on  this one.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When we get scorching hot summers and heatwaves, the outside tomato excels.  When it is a wet miserable summer, the blight gets to them (more readily than potatoes in my case)  :(  Like DD, I've had 2 bad years so I have resorted to buying a greenhouse AND aiming to grow outdoor varieties outside as well, especially those with a supposed shorter growing period - I might just get some nice ripened ones before the blight hits them this time ( did I just say?)
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
