Urgent rabbit help please
« on: January 05, 2012, 00:47 »
Hi guys been a while I know but at least I know where to turn when I need help and advice. My rex rabbit Trouble has been into vets for dental work today despite being checked every six months it came to light she was poorly bad anyway trip to the vet later and a spell under anaesthetic. Turns out her teeth on one side were growing into her cheek so 6 teeth out and scraping on the inside of her cheek to find healthy flesh. Vet said it is worst thing she had ever seen and one day at a time now. I'm feeding liquid bunny food at moment to keep her going. Keeping very close eye. She is cuddled up To her sister and looks bright and alert. Any more advice guys please. We're back to vet every day till me and them are happy. Anything else I can do.
Em

Hi Em, good to see you back.
Make sure you provide a gnawing block for the rabbits
Nothing else that you can do but follow the vets advice. Our eldest had a pet rat called Sybil when he was little and she never gnawed which caused her teeth to keep growing and go into her cheeks. We had to trim them monthly (not an easy thing to do with a rat).
Staffies are softer than you think.

Sorry to hear about your bun. It's hard to see the problems with back teeth until they are bad. Did the vet give any advice? I would just keep her warm and cosy, with her sister and provide fresh green hay . The liquid feed is a good idea and I hope she isn't too difficult to feed, but her bowels do need to remain active or they will go into stasis. Sounds like you are doing a good job. Good luck.

Thanks guys my vet is fab and I've had lots of help trouble seems to be eating and pelleting. All I got to do now is keep fingers crossed and try and get metacam and bay trip down her twice daily. Easier said than done but so far so good. Back to vet Saturday for check up and may get her to show me how
It's done properly.

I take it she is on antibiotics ?

Keep up with them & keep an eye out for infection.

I mention this as I had a chinchilla, similar issue. Specialist vet said he could clip them & drill the roots to stop growth & they would just wear away.

To cut a long story short, he got infection after infection & his teeth never healed & he passed away.

Hopefully that won't be an issue, but just keep an eye out.

Hope all goes well & bunny bounces back.

I hope Trouble is on the mend Hawkins?

Our "Pebbles" (large floppy eared male rabbit) is on metacam and antibiotics having lept from the top floor of his hutch and landed nose first! Net results was "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!!

It would have been nicer had he used the ramp to the ground floor of the hutch before wandering off around the place!

We think / hope the vet is right and the rabbit's teeth will eventually regrow. My daughter, having brought her pet all the way back from Northern Ireland, would miss Pebbles greatly if he wasn't around to prune our flower beds and watch tv when he sneaks indoors!

(It would have been nicer and cheaper if "someone" had closed the top door to prevent Pebbles taking the short-cut down!
                    But...what do I know.  ::))

How's Bunny ?  :)

Bunny is..... expensive but on the mend - thanks for asking.  :)

Presently sitting in his hutch covered by a posh hutch-snuggler but, so far, no request for central heating.

His two front teeth are still there and, apparently, still growing. He's eating and hopping well.  ;)
