You could try leaving a clutch of eggs in a nest.  Replace them with fertile ones if you get a hen go broody on them.

My neighbour asked me for some old golf balls to put in the nests.  Might have been for this reason?

That would do it WG.  I taught my hens where to lay their eggs by leaving a couple of golf balls in their nest  :D

clock as in clocking ... aka broody.

So ... ???   How did hens survive as a species before golf was invented?

Thank you for your words of wisdom W,G but I had already assumed that.  What I want to know is WHY call being broody "clocking", where did that come  from  :?:

I only got my allotment last year, and almost right away I got hens. Anyway I was so interested in learning about them I was asking other people for a look at theirs and so on. Eventually peoples hens started getting broody and sitting on eggs. The person whose chicken it was told me that it was clocking. So that is why I say clocking and not brooding (as much)lol. Otherwise if I had been told first that it was called brooding thats what I would call it. But either way suits me. :)

Clucker, Clocker it makes no difference to me but for the sake of anyone thinking otherwise when I post I shall write Broody. People near me say exactly the same as me, clucker or clocker!!  :)    :D      8)
