Sterilising Jars
« on: August 22, 2011, 15:52 »
OK, so I have been cutting corners, but it seems to have worked.

Last year I got into a bit of a tiz making some courgette chutney and had forgotten to sterlise or warm the jars. Being a man I needed to fix things quickly, so.....

2 mins in the microwave certainly warmed them, I guessed that very little was going to survive going through the microwave and I had probably sterlised them as well.

Flushed with pride I carried on the same way with the other jams and stuff I made and so far nothing has developed any mould or has gone off in any way. Or at least those things that haven't been eaten.

Have I done wrong, or have I just saved time and achieved the same?

Thoughts?

It's easy to sterilise jars in the microwave, but it's usually done before filling rather than after, and there is a chance you could crack cold jars when you fill them with hot jam or chutney

What did you do with the metal lids?

Yeh I got it right!

They were empty and yes I took the lids off first.

But did you sterilise the lids?
Staffies are softer than you think.
