« on: May 18, 2011, 15:21 »
i have seen some pumpkins grown on compost bins.
if i did this would they leach out all the goodnes and make it usless?
i have a bin half full of well rotted manure so i was thinking of there.

thanks

It works well providing you can stop the blackbirds from hoiking out the plant from the top. They constantly chuck the manure around in their search for bugs

I wouldn't have thought that the muck would be rendered useless!  Muck is great stuff, not just for feeding, but for bulking out soils and retaining moisture.  If you have a muck pile the goodness leaches out with rainfall which is why they get covered up but it's still useful stuff even when it's been used for growing hungry veggies.  You can never have enough  :)

I think even being as greedy as a Pumpkin can be they will struggle to eat an entire compost heap- but do see to relish the challenge.

Do make sure they are not planted right at the bottom though, as when my uncle did this he managed to drown the poor plant in run off!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
