Osteoporosis
« on: May 05, 2019, 12:09 »
I have just been told that the dexa scan results have confirmed I have this.   I wasn't surprised as one about 10 years ago confirm osteopenia (a pre-cursor).   I have been given all these things to take, all of which make me sick, so not taking them.  The doc said, she would arrange for me to have calcium infusions.
But, the thing is, it is not going to change any thing in my life.   I shall still climb up and clear out gutters, climb trees and the grape vine to prune, and run across the roof if I have to !
So why all the big deal.     Mrs Bouquet

We have an osteoporosis specialist nurse in our WI & she & a colleague gave us a talk on the subject, I’m sure she said with the medication, correct exercise it can be halted & reversed so that is why you should take the medication offered. The alternatives are a life of pain & broken bones for a very long time particularly if you are going to continue your high risk lifestyle 😱😊Please ask to see some one like the specialist nurse in your area who will have time to explain things thoroughly to you & maybe take a family member with you to help remember some of the info & ask questions.

Thanks for  your advice.  The spinal consultant was in fact the person who said tell your doc to arrange the infusions, they by-pass the stomach and will not make you so sick.   When the doc said she would refer me for infusion, guess who does them   -  The Spinal Consultant, who looks after my back and trapped nerves - well well, there's a thing  ::)  he suggested it in the first place.   Talk about going round in circles.  Unfortunately, since an infant, I have never been able to take calcium in any way, shape or form.   Oranges and fish are both the same as well.    ::)  I will always try everything they suggest, but cannot be so poorly for 48 hours with these tablets.

Have they tested your Vitamin D levels Mrs B?  We need Vit D to absorb calcium, and K2 to direct it to the bones (otherwise the calcium can build up plaques in the arteries).  There  are some great supplements (Vit D + K2) which are very small and easy to take.  If you have a decent diet with plenty of calcium, they may help you to hang on to it.  :)

Thanks for that reply, I wasn't aware of that.   I haven't found the professionals very helpful.   But I shall get these next time I am in town.    Mrs Bouquet

mrs bouquet I was advised not to take vitamin D without levels being tested first, as you can overdose.
Good luck.

You can get an easy dosage mouth spray for K2 on its own, if you don't need the vit d ;)

I have spoken today with the nurse, and it seems that the daily tablet is Vit D3, it is called Colecalciferol, 1 x daily.  When I explained it made me feel unwell, she advised taking it in the evening with my main meal.
They do not prescribe Vit K2   (when I was in hospital for 12 weeks with pancreatic probs, and only TPN food and no drinks I had to have Vit K injections sometimes) .   So I shall now look to buy Vit K2.  Mum your spray one sounds good, one less pill to take  :D  Thanks everybody,  you have certainly helped me to understand things more.   Mrs Bouquet

Mum had a similar problem and found it better to take it with lots of food - ie evening meal.  Sounds odd but it did work.  Like wise cod liver oil before bed was easier than in the morning.

(at one stage I had to take an anti inflammatory 4 times a day, and the only way I could keep it down was to take it with food, ideally carbs.  Not great for the weight, but I put up with it ....  ::) )
