Laying gap?
« on: August 16, 2011, 08:03 »
Hey,

Im probably just being a big worrier,

But just checking - my Roady Red came into lay a fortnight ago, laid an egg every day for a week, laid a soft egg, then a proper egg on Thursday.  It hasn’t laid since?

Is it normal for chickens coming into lay to stop after just getting started?

I had one that stopped laying for nearly 3 weeks, we only started keeping them early June and were told this one had just started laying.  She layed well for a few weeks - nearly every day but then just stopped.

She then just started again and has layed almost daily since

Hi Lew,

My light sussex Lily has been laying for a couple of weeks,  :) then like yours laid a couple of soft ones and has stopped for 4-5 days now.

Nice to know this is not uncommon.

All six of my pullets have just come into lay and have been following a very irregular laying schedule!  I've been recording their eggs on a spreadsheet and it is a very graphic display of on-off-on laying.  :)

I will try to put the table here and see if I can make the formatting work.

Edit: Yes that worked. :)

Patience is a Barnevelder and Elsie and Phoebe are Barred Plymouth Rocks.

Take a look at the size of Patience's egg on 13 August after she had taken a break from laying!

hehe you are far to organised!

My first few eggs were in a butty so quick there was no chance of weighing them!!!

Some one layed a soft egg yesterday, not sure if it was the red starting again or one of the light sussex coming into lay!

Will keep an eye on things and see how we go i think!  I dont know whoes eggs are whos yet so have yet to work out who is laying and who isnt hehe
