getting chickens into the coop at night
« on: April 12, 2009, 22:24 »
Hi i am having problems ,we have 4 new hens at POL. We cannot get them into the coop at night no matter what we have tried, but they are happy to lay there eggs in the nesting boxs and then come straight out again.

At the moment we have to round them up and put them in at night, has anyone got any ideas in how to train them into the coop at night? any advice would be great, thanks.

it'll happen (i hope!!)  ::)
the best thing, is like you said, just keep putting them in the right place.

ours are very eager to tell us that they'll decide where and when they'll go to bed!

it does get annoying at times, but keep at it.

as long as they're secure in a fox-proof run at bedtime, then it's not really a huge deal.  :)

A handy little tip for you....
Put a torch into the coop is sight of the hens and when it starts to get dark they will head for the light ;)
This has worked for most people, give it a try and let us know how you get on

My chickens are in a rabbit hutch at night time and when I am putting them to bed they usually come over scrape around me then go in. If they don't I usually lift a small handfull of straw and sometimes a bit of seed and put it in the outer part of their hutch and they always go in for that.

Thank you Lucy!

We've ameraucanas & black australorps at about 8 weeks that we just moved from the greenhouse/garden to pasture.  We're in bear country (Rappahannock County, Virginia), so in addition to 2 lines of electric fence (one bare wire, the other electric netting) we want the girls secured at night.  Last night was a bit of a circus, tonight (after a minute with google) was simplicity.  Switched on light before dinner, then went out & closed the door after dessert.

Many, many thanks

If all else fails, you could always try the undignified approach and shove them in their house, and close them in - after a couple of times they should be okay.

« Reply #7 on: April 29, 2009, 15:31 »
  Hi, Can anyone come up with any reasons that my chickens are not laying very well. I have got 8 girls but only getting average 4 eggs a day. They are all eating well and are very healthy. A mounth ago i was getting a lot more eggs but they have gone on a go slow. Any advice would be helpfull as i am quite new to this and i want to do the best that i can. They have fresh veg every day as well as there pellets and a bit of corn.
    Thanks Jeanette
