I use straw for nest boxes and dust extracted shavings for floors / under the perch but others may disagree.

I find it easier to clean up shavings from the perch area and the straw in the nest box seems to let them know that there's a difference between this area and the rest of the henhouse

I tend to put shavings in the nest box but then cover it with straw as I found when I just used straw in the nest box my fat girls were squashing it down and when they laid their eggs they cracked.  Ever since I have used both I havent had a problem.

I only use shavings in the main coop area though.

I also take the sandwich type approach.... mainly because two of mine like the downy softness of the straw when THEY POO IN THE NEST BOX... :x  :x  :x  so it makes it easier for me to tidy out and keep my eggies clean  :D  :D  Fresh shavings smell so nice in the house too!
