Hatching eggs
« on: September 17, 2008, 21:37 »
Hi there

I have a poulry question.

I have 10 eggs cooking away in an incubator, 2 of which hatched on Sunday, which was day 23 !!

I was going to turn off the incubator today and have just opened one of the eggs left in there, I got as far as the membrane, but realised that there is a fully grown chick in the egg.

It is now day 26 is there any chance the remaining eggs will hatch.

Also how do you sex a chick, does anyone know?

Many thanks

Heather

Was the chick alive in the egg you opened???

I'd be very suprised at day 26

You can't really tell what the chicks are going to be untill they're about 10 days when combs get bigger on the males.
Certain breeds you can tell the sex by the colour, certain breeds (Buff Orps) you can't tell for ages  :?

Welcome to the forum by the way :D

Id be surprised at day 26 if it were alive. I awlays give mine a little longer just to make sure, but by 26 I would be surprised if they hatched

Have there been anymore signs of life from your eggs?
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I eventually opened all the remaining eggs and out of the 10 left, 3 had fully grown dead chicks in them.  I was told by an old neirbourgh that it was probably because I switched off the egg turning bit of the incubator a few days before they were due and I should not of turned it off untill hours before!!    Any ideas?

Eggs should be stopped turning 3 days before they are due to hatch or the poor little mites have no idea which way to go to hatch!

Ive had mixed success with hatching as well: :D  :(  :D  :(

Temperature, turning and humidity are very important, because chicks took longer than normal to hatch it might have been a bit cool in the incubator, do you have a thermometer at side of eggs>  Also chicks need increased humidity to hatch. Then again it might not be this either, some of my chicks had deformed beaks and couldnt have hatched anyway = found out that flouride in water can result in deformities and that you are best to give rainwater.  Please note that I am not an authority on all this just trying to learn like you, any more ideas please
