Title: Chick with crusty bottom!
Post by: jo40 on September 11, 2009, 19:21
Hello
Can anybody give me give me tips on cleaning up a 3 week old chicks bottom :(! I have 4 cream legbar chicks, only one has poo stuck to her backside. I have tried soaking her back end in water, it doesn't want to shift and I am worries if I soak her too much she will get a chill.
Her vent is clear, it is stuck below so I am not too concerned. Do I need to remove the poo now or can I wait until she is a bit bigger, less fragile?
Thanks Jo

Have the water body temperature.  Swirl the water around her bottom and gently tease out the poo with your fingers.  Once the area is clear, pat dry with kitchen roll a,d fully dry with a hair dryer on a low temp (but not cold) setting.  She shouldn't get too cold then.

It might help if you have a helper, but I've found that with a warm bath chooks don't struggle like you'd expect them too.
