i didnt really but an idea has formed or maybe an experiment! I am an hairdresser by trade and something i know to work on nits is tea tree oil!
Now i am not suggesting you put this straight on your plants but most insects that i am aware of do not like this natural oil and will steer clear of it!
I think i may put a cold glass of oil near my plants to see if it maybe beneficial to getting rid of e.g. carrot fly not dissimilar to the nit also known as pediculosis capitas, i am always interested to see if ideas that forem can create difference, just wondered if anyone would like to take this journey or maybe already has been done with what effect?

Interesting RRB, let us know how you get on. :) I've done a forum search and have seen its use mentioned in relation to onions. ;)

maybe just a few (10?) drops neat into a dosage glass put under a plant (to keep rain out) and let the oil evaporate slowly on the plot?

Would maybe a few drops of an essential oil maybe do the same job.  Something like Lavender oil.  Not an expert but just got my thinking juices going as well.

Having said that I just put a small fence of fleece or enviromesh around my carrots at my house garden and never had any trouble from carrot fly!!

As I understand it carrot fly can only fly close to the ground so a 18" high fleece fence around carrots should be ok as long as there are no gaps underneath that the little blighters can get through!!
