Cucamelons
« on: March 23, 2013, 19:00 »
I saw these on Suttons, and talked myself in to buying a packet of seeds as they are apparently perennial.

Has anyone grown them before, and are the worth growing for their taste, or are they not really that great?

If they dont taste amazing, i'll still grow them for decorative purposes and they will get the family talking at meal times....

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

You are better waiting to plant them until late April or even May, forget perennial, treat them as an annual. I am really far south and I wait until beginning of May to plant - they love warmth. Lovely things, grow really well under cover.  :D

I bought them too for this year's trial. Look forward to seeing what comes of it, but I'm not sowing till May either. All my March sowing is now backed into April...

YUMMY ! I add them to salads mainly. I wait until they nearly fall off the plant, you will see what I mean. Melt in the mouth then. If you pick them too soon they don't have much taste.

Fantastic stuff, and I will follow your advice.

So, does Grape, Melon, Lime or Cucumber give the closest indication to flavour in your opinion?

Mmmm, cross between a cuc and a melon ... sort of ! Unique. Very vigorous growing plants btw. Don't overwater them.

Maybe add a little runner bean flavour to it too!

The melon aspect of the name always put me off these, but on Beechgrove last night they showed their crop growing and described them as having a lime flavour, so I might be interested in them next year. :)

I didn't fancy cucamelons as they sounded like a load of fancy nonsense like the asparagus pea.  I am however growing Mexican gherkins which sounded great, do you know what they are otherwise known as... you guessed it cucamelons!
