Loose Onions
« on: January 16, 2010, 16:42 »
Not loose as in floosies you understand. It's just that I went to the allotment today and discovered a few of my over-wintering onions had gaps around them - possibly ice or wind damage. They also seem to have been pushed up a little.

Should I pile some soil round them or dig them up gently and re seat them a little lower?

Cheers.

I'd leave as is. Soon as some rain hits them they will settle in.

Deffinately don't dig them up, will cause damage to the root system.

I was told to sit my onion sets in a small depression on the surface. Blimey! I thought. However they have sprouted nicely even though the bulbs are still above the soil in all this ice, snow and rain.
Yours should be fine.

I think it's frost that heaves the soil up  :)
