Traditionally shallots are planted on the shortest day i.e. 21st December. My experience is that if you do that they just sit there cold until the Spring.

If you put them in too early they will produce a lot of soft leaf which may be damaged in the Winter, also they may bolt.

In my opinion you would be better to wait another month. There will still be enough warmth in the soil to allow them to produce a few roots and a bit of leaf ready to grow away quickly at the first hint of Spring.

I plant garlic and onions at this time of year, but I leave shallots until  late winter /early spring and they do very well from sets.  I did a few from seed this year, starting them off in January and they were very good too.
