Just lost a chicken
« on: March 22, 2012, 22:46 »
Twister my favourite cuckoo leghorn had to be put to sleep tonight.  When I got home from work the wife was trying to catch her because something had attacked her.  We got her to the vets and she was in a bad way,  there was a flap of skin about  5"x 4" hanging off her back and her right wing was broken in several places   What on earth could have done this,  all the other girls were fine and we have never had a problem before.

Sorry for your loss  :(. It isn't that common for a cat to attack a fully grown hen but it can happen. My guess is more than likely a dog as these will chase just the one bird snapping away trying to grab them which could account for the tear. My pup is going through this stage at the moment and when the hen gets into a tight space where they can bury their heads like an ostrich the pup leaves her alone - again pointing to her being left alive - is your garden accessable to dogs?

No way that a dog could have gotten into the garden, it's surrounded by 6' fences and trees.  there are lots of domestic cats around us but we have never had a problem before.

So sorry for your loss Madrat.

Could she have got caught in a wire fence and caused the damage to herself?  Would be worth a look to see if you have any damaged fence.   :(
