chicken poo (again!)
« on: December 06, 2008, 17:26 »
I've got a poorly hen.  She's passing what looks like creamy coloured dropping with bits of green in them, quite loose.
She's very light but appeared to be ok 48 hours ago.  I've isolated
her in a little pen in the chicken house and given her layer feed and some water with Vermex in it.
There a website (?) with photos of lots of sorts of chicken droppings with explanations of what could be wrong.  Does anyone know which site/page
it is on please.

Thanks
Valerie

Think you'll find it in the poultry Information section. Will try and dig it out.

Here it is:

Thanks for your quick reply Kate.
Looking at the photo, my hen could have either worms or egg peritonitis
as she has her tail down, is tired, not eating.
I won't be surprised if I find her dead tomorrow.  I've put a perch in her pen but she's sleeping on the floor.  She's drunk a little bit of the water with Verm-X but she felt far too light and didn't get excited when I put some mixed corn on the floor for her.  She's only about 6 months old at most and a good layer.

I've now saved that "Poo page" in my favourites, as I found it came in very useful when I first got my hens a few months ago.

Do you think she's lost weight colliebird ?

I'd recommend flubenvet for treating worms rather than verm-x.

Has she laid eggs recently ? and is her abdomen swollen at all ?

Don't know if she's laid.  They usually lay either very early before I get up, or during the day sometime.  I'm getting 2 eggs a day from 4 hens.  All the same size, rather large.  She's lost a lot of weight in 48 hours and
just stands there, tail down, looks as if she's napping.  Back end soiled
with creamy coloured poo.  Noticed this sort of poo a little bit yesterday, but more today.
I won't be able to get any flubenvet until Monday, shops and vets are closed.  She might bit even be alive by then. :(

Me again,  the poo/droppings are not like any of the photos. There's no
solid at all, just bits of green (bright green).  She "seems" a bit perkier this afternoon.  If she's still alive tomorrow I'll go and get some Flubenvet
tomorrow morning first thing.
If a hen has egg peritonitis, how long does it take before she dies from it?  I would have thought it would be quite quick, but she's been holding on for almost 2 days now.
Hen house is so cold inside.  The 3 others are snuggled up together, but she's in her separate pen in the hen house and won't roost, she's sleeping on the shavings on the floor.
She has lost weight.

She's not eating, but I've seen her pecking a bit at the floor and she is drinking.
I'll try and take a photo of the green stuff tomorrow morning.
I'll also go and get some Flubenvet.I hope she gets better.
It's unbelievable how I've become attached to chickens!!!  I "only" bought them for eggs!.  She's a Black Rock and they're supposed to be quite sturdy chickens. :flower:

She sounds unwell to me.  If she's not eating the poo will be gree from the bile that's passing out unchanged.   It's very difficult to say what the problem is.  If she had egg peritonitis her abdomen will be swollen.

My poorly hens poo dated 8.12.08
As you can see, it is just green that has tainted the wood shavings.
No consistency.

This is a picture I took this morning of my chickens poo. Hen still alive, no change, not eating

I moved the pic over here for you Colliebird - Sarah :)

Just spoken to the vet.  Said it could be several things, doesn't think it is worms.  I found this. Green droppings are mentioned for several cases.  I am going to cull her today as I don't want her continuing to suffer or to pass on any nasties to the others.

Really sorry you have had to make the hardest decision about your girl. It certainly sounds like you are doing the right thing for her, no matter how hard it is.

Sorry about your hen.
I had much the same experience with a black star, (which is a RIR/plymouth rock cross) of the same age.
My others did not pick up any illness from her so I hope that your others will be fine. Are they all black rocks?
