Greenhouse temps and germinating brassicas
« on: February 25, 2014, 12:22 »
Hi all.
I've got a small Wilko greenhouse within a greenhouse (if that makes sense) and have been using it to germinate brassica seeds because the main unheated greenhouse seemed to get too cold at night. For the last few days though, the sun (I think that is what it is called) has raised the temp inside the  Wilko greenhouse over 20 C and yesterday it registered 38C!! It is getting down to around 6-8 C at night but there is a cold snap forecast this weekend so do I move the seeds to the main greenhouse during the day and then into the Wilko greenhouse night when the night temp drops? I dont want to cook the seeds so that they don't germinate.
Thanks  :)
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

A cold frame or cold greenhouse is quite enough protection for brassicas - they really don't need anything warmer.

Especially brassicas! They just don't need/like it.

I germinate mine in a frost free greenhouse, barely any warmth at all.  Plants come out nice & sturdy. By all means crank the heat up if you want some leggy weaklings!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine are germinated in the heated greenhouse, next to the door away from the heater and propagators etc, when they are transplanted into large modules the go in the cold greenhouse, and if we have a nice day forecast they can go out for the day.

If they don't come up soon, you may find that you have indeed already overcooked them!  You might need to sow more seed, but they will catch up.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh dear I  worry so much that heat is needed for everything to germinate.
I'll move them into the main greenhouse somewhere cooler and see what happens over the next few days. I've got more seeds (I knew buying the 50p packets at Wyevales would payoff) if they dont germinate.
Thanks all.
