Fruit Tree's
« on: February 11, 2010, 18:52 »
Picked up two new tree's last weekend one plum one Cherrie. They stand about 4ft tall still in pots. l know this is the time of year they should go in but with the sharp frost's we have been getting are they still ok to go in this weekend?
Any other advice about putting tree's in would be a big help first time planting one.

That's the nice thing about potted plants, they can be planted out at any time. Its the bare-rooted ones you must be careful with.
Frosty days or nights aren't a problem with bare stemmed trees as they're dormant anyway. If they have leaf buds or sprouts, then its a greenhouse for them until weather is better.
When you do plant them, be sure the hole will get all the goodness you can provide to give the young trees a good start, eg some bonemeal, composted manure, sharp sand if the soil is very heavy, etc. And keep the trees well watered the first year. The cherry should be in a location you can keep thieving birds in check once the crops show up. They rarely both with plums but they adore cherries  >:(

Thanks for your reply's they still look dormant so should be ok to go in this Saturday.
I dug a bag of compost and some old manure where they are going last weekend so it's just a case of finger's crossed.
