Protecting Brassicas
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:51 »
Hi,

I started off some Brassicas last year and quickly discovered the joy the pigeons take in eating them.

I am trying to be more organised this year, so I am starting to think about how best to protect them.

I'm guessing a cage/net is the way to go but I am open to other more ingenious suggestions. I don't have a falcon though, so that option is out. :)

Cheers!

Nets work. You don't really need anything else. I just drape enviromesh over them, don't even need a frame, just something to weigh it down.

I do Enviromesh too.  Make sure it's weighed down properly as you can't afford to have it blow away. If it gets damaged and holed then the insects will get in

I just drape it over the plants and allow for growing room, well held down with bottles of water or lengths of wood etc.

Cheers! The blue pipe looks amazing. That will get some funny looks on the plot.

I've just done some small tunnels like that for the early carrots, but I'd not thought of crossing them over for a square bed like that. I don't normally, but I had a few odd lengths left from making a polytunnel(ish) frame.

I can't be bothered with the hoops. The crops just push up the mesh as they grow  :D

I go for bottles on sticks, weighed down with wooden stakes at the edges.

The only problem came this winter with the snow; it snapped some of the canes.  Lesson learned - I will use stronger supports if I go down this route again.  The sticks were Poundland 20 for £1 canes though - some were very weak.

A said netting, any gap left the pigeons find it, debris netting is cost effective, I have found netting at garden centres off the roll relatively cheap at times.  Pigeons drove me up the wall last year
