How old for Pekin and Wyandotte to be pol?
« on: September 23, 2009, 14:44 »
I have two girls in my little flock who are around 24 weeks. One a partridge Pekin the other a rather pretty blue laced Wyandotte both have ruddy red comb albeit rather small combs. I am anticipating any time now for the much awaited first egg, would you agree? My young Wyandotte also has a very red comb too, but she is too young being only 16 weeks. My Legbar is huge, but only 15 weeks, I am hoping she my lay in the next few weeks?

Also what would you suggest I do regarding feed, as I will have pol needing layers pellets and my little girls (youngest 13 weeks) still needing growers, should I do a mix or stick to growers and a bit of corn?

Give them all layers.
As growers contain anti Coccidiosis ingredients which should not be feed to laying birds as it will transfer to the eggs. Do not mix in corn unless you want your chickens to chuck the feed about searching for the corn.
Photos of combs would be good but 24 weeks it should be soon. Fingers crossed.

The wait is so frustrating isn't it!  I have a feeling the colder nights are putting some of my ladies off from starting to lay.  Some of my older ladies have also started moulting so I'm not really getting many eggs at all at the moment!   :D

Fingers crossed they start laying soon and your patience is rewarded with lovely omlettes and scrambly eggies and poached eggs and boiled eggs... yum

I am waiting for pekins to lay too, my 3 older girls are all moulting, so none from them  >:( and my younger girls are 24 weeks, 20 weeks and one is 18 weeks, none are laying! The 18 week old has the biggest reddest comb, but she's still a tiny little thing! However, last year we had two sisters the same age, one started laying in september, the other didnt start until feb this year!! So don't be too worried if it doesnt happen soon  ::)
