Do you only put manure where you plan to put potatoes as i have read, seen some people dig it into every square inch of their plot.

Any where except root crops if there is plenty.

Add as much as you like, anywhere except for the roots/carrot bed, as it can make the roots fork.

Spread over unused beds and allowed to mellow while the worms etc do the work. Handily it keeps the weeds down too

Easier than digging it in, and I just move it aside with a hoe if I want to plant root crops.

all i would suggest is that you get it down as early as possible to let it work into the soil. last year i dug in manure just before planting and mulched with rabbit manure and found i had an awful lot of foliage growth but not as good of a crop. in fact i found the year before with no organic worked in produced a better crop.

Sounds as though your soil already had enough nitrogen already in it and the manure added to the its content, hence the excess foliage.

i'm pretty sure it didn't have a great deal of nutrients in it before. it was a new piece of land 2 years ago which had been used as nothing more than a dumping / burning ground for 15 plus years. either way this year i'm leaving manuring to a minimum on my spud bed (only going to work in the mulch that is left from the bassicas last year) and see how it goes.
