Is it too late to lime?
« on: January 25, 2012, 17:03 »
before the end of last season I did a lime test on part of my home allotment that I struggle to grow anything .....  the soil is (if I read it right) 5.5ph. Since then I forgot all about it.  Just got back from wilko's with a bag full of seeds and a box of Arthur Bowers garden lime.

Can I lime now?  I havent put any fertilzer on my beds, I was going to empty my compost bin onto all my beds in the next few weeks, can I still do this and lime?  Not sure what can go with what and when???  I have only ever sowed my seeds with a sprinkle of growmore and hoped for the best!! This year its time to get serious!!! :)

There`s a good piece on liming on the site. Go to Articles and Advice at the top of the home page then click the link for Fertilisers then near the bottom of the page is a link for the liming article.

Paul.
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.

The good news is your acid soil sounds just right for growing potatoes  :D

So don't lime the whole plot, will you?

Just sprinkle it around where you are goin to grow cabbages and other brassicas. You'll need to be fairly generous.

A couple of weeks or thereabouts before planting /sowing will be fine  :D

thanks sunshine.  decided not to grow potatoes this year in the ground but in bags ... also only new.  Last years main crop didnt do so well the leaves went brown and yellow really early and only had a handful of very small pots.... plus when you can get 12.5kg of really good pots from your local farm for £3.50..
Brought some purple sprouting (something new this year) and lots of carrots .... love carrots didnt buy any for months last year was very proud of myself!  4th year in growing veg and hoping this year is going to be a complete winner!!!
