Sorry Nathan, it takes Shaun a long time to catch up. At planting time we had a discussion about trimming tops & roots. Shaun's still in that time warp.

However much it pains me - I agree - just leave them be!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Some of mt leeks were trimmed by a rabbit and are now no different to those not, also all the long bits of leaf help keep soil out if heavy rain kicks it up.

ps. I am actively looking for thin pipe to put over them, so they whiten up nice. keep an eye on yer drainpipes!

Nobody mentioned earthing them up? (ahem!)
I did that with mine and they've fattened up well.  The ones I planted first and didn't earth up are rather fine and a bit rusty.

Trimming ends never helped me grow leeks like the others, until I learnt to sow/plant them earlier and plant in a fertile bed.

In the meantime, I bought some giant/mammoth onion seeds which grew standard size leeks and saved embaressment.

But I still trim the tops as it helps me count how many are in a bundle if they're all the same height.
