figs

There is such a thing as 'false' figs which you should nip off.  They will often be longer more pearshaped rather than onionshaped.  The real ones will come in the nook of two branches - think of the place you would nip your tomatoes, that is where the new ones will come.

Also, if you cant bring the pot inside in the shed/greenhouse, you should aim to protect it from the frost by packing the pot in straw and the tree in fleece.  They hate hate hate the winter winds.

Good luck  :D

I planted out a 1ft fig tree in April, South facing front garden and it is now 6ft with lots of unripe figs.  Given that it can reach over 20 degs C below here near lake Balaton in the Winter, do I cut it back and do I protect what's left with fleece?  Looking forward to sound advice as usual,
Regards, Ben

Szia Ben, wrapping up seems a good idea to me.  Whereabouts are you?

Do you live there, or is it a weekend garden? My brother lives just outside Nagykanizsa. You know, my mum usually gets most of her figs frozen, so watch out.

Live here most of the year.  There are about 40 Brits live this end of the lake that we know of.  Am thinking of emailing/calling them to have a meet to pick each others brains with ref to living here. [Sorry Moderator, will not deviate from the thread again]
