No, DD was the bloke filling cat litter trays from the public flowerbeds (for next year's leek seedlings).

No No - you've got it all wrong. I was taking me geranium cuttings.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i think i spent about £100 on seeds i have loads left over for next year but i am a bit addicted to seed buying   as i always buy organic so it works out cheaper for me to grow my own, frustrating but worth it when you harvest your dinner. i love going to "barn "sales and getting old tools as i think they are made stronger than new rip off tools. i paid £3.00 for a spade which looks about 50 years old but it will last me.

I can send DD some of my own saved leek seeds in exchange for some cat litter trays with the geranium cuttings. Is that a deal?

Had the plot for a number of years so expenditure only for rent, seeds, manure, bag of Blood, Fish & Bone , seed compost and the odd sundry every so often (netting, fleece, canes etc.
Never counted it but I guess can't be more than £150 most years which works out at about £3 per week. I must get at least £150 of potatoes and onions per year so I suppose the rest o fthe fruit and veg is free. :D
Ah well ! There is always next year !

Rent £20 (80ft x 50ft plot, with tap and road access.)
Seeds £30
Seed potatoes and onion sets £15
Mushroom compost 30 bags @ £1.50 = £45
Organic fertiliser 2 bags @ £5 = £10

(Last four are all heavily subsidised.....our allotment does bulk buying from local potato/compost merchants, plus the seeds and fertiliser come from Kings Seeds who do an amazing bulk discount seed scheme for allotments. Seeds can be less than 50% of catalogue price.)

Sundries like nets, nails, canes etc) £30

So Grand Total =£150 per year, or around £3 per week.

Take home? Last week I brought home spuds, six sweetcorn, 2lb of autumn rasps, big punnet of brambles, huge bag of mixed salad leaves, mizuna, kale and spring onions for stir fry; carrots, purple turnips, onions and beetroot for a casserole, a cabbage and a bunch of sweet peas. I can't be bothered to work out what that lot would have cost at Tesco, but I suspect more than £3! Yes, I know there are lean weeks ahead, but I only need to bring home a bit of winter salad, some leeks and a few root veggies to cover my weekly costs. And I've got plenty already in storage.

Some of my leeks are producing seed heads, I'd like to save some seeds but will this affect the ediblility of the leek?
Also, a point on seed collecting: it was no bother to save peas, beans, radish and rocket seeds as they are quite big but I spent 4 hours round the telly last night seperating lettuce seeds from plant and fluff and ended up with the equivalent of a 50p pack of seeds!

I dunno, it's first year I sowed my own leek seed, will try some soon
Small seeds are a bit of a pain in that department, break up and as much as can be cleaned in much less time...bits of dry plant material can be safely sown with them, just like the sand idea
I'm not in it for the money exclusively

Only had my allotment since May
Only a guess but about hundred and thirty quid so far.
But eighty quid of this was a petrol strimmer(my new toy)
Also havent got a shed yet, this will have to wait,
Rome wasnt built in a day!
To keep the cost down look in Wilkinsons and the pound shops, have bought all my tools from Wilkies and most of my seeds too. Both have performed very well.
To put a price on my first ever home grown sweetcorn PRICELESS :tongue2:
