Sulphate of potash
« on: March 02, 2014, 08:42 »
I have been given a pack of Sulphate of potash, I  know it's good for  strawberries, what else can I use it on.
Someone suggested use it on my potato bed, but I've already put manure on it.

Here is a link to a site which I find very useful and informative on many different fertilisers. http://hstrial-adickinson1.homestead.com/Garden-Fertiliser-Needs.html#anchor_43

Any fruiting plant plus broad beans love it and it keeps the brown spots at bay.. Strawberries, fruit trees and bushes, peas, beans, potatoes love it.

I'd keep it off onions and garlic - they dont need it.

Funny you mentioned brown spots, last year I had some yellowing and brown spots on my potatoes, being a complete novice I thought it was blight, I also had brown spots on my broad beans. Could it have been they just needed some Sulphate and potash.

Here is a link to Johns info on BB's where I gleaned that info..

http://www.allotment-garden.org/grow-your-own/broad-fava-beans.php

Quote from Johns info page... "Chocolate spot is another fungal disease. It causes dark, chocolate-coloured spots on all parts of the plant. It can cause the plant to collapse and is worse in overcrowded , cool, moist, conditions. A lack of potash may weaken plants so add extra potash to the soil."

Not at all.. Manure is more a soil conditioner than a fertilizer..
