Watermelons - any advice
« on: February 10, 2014, 18:16 »
Melons - failed 3 years in a row to get anything from them in an unheated greenhouse. So, they are on my list of 'things that will not be'.
That being said, I was in Lidl over the weekend and happened to glance at their seeds. At 29p their watermelons - Sugar Baby - just suckered me in. (Symptom of SBA I guess).

So, if I failed with melons (tried about 3 varieties though can't remember the names - Galia was one I think) am I likely to be an absolute failure with these 'babies' too?
Any advice gratefully received. The packet indicates 20-25 centigrade for germination, 60cm spacing  (and has a picture of the sun on it)  :D - I guess it might require water and nutrients too?  :)

Cheers,
Balders

You need heat at least a poly tunnel and a good long winter... I think you wasted 29p!

20-25 C to germinate... Only in Africa - where I come from!!
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Hey Balders I think you answered you own question with your first sentence in your post..

"Melons - failed 3 years in a row to get anything from them in an unheated greenhouse. So, they are on my list of 'things that will not be'."

I've got some seed from dt browns this year. Not grown them before. Growing them through black membrane is recommended to attract as much warmth as possible.
