Poorly Cockerel
« on: October 14, 2010, 20:49 »
Hi, i have a very poorly D,Anvers x Cockerel that i hatched this year who went down suddenly yesterday.. He is a bit unsteady on his feet and will not eat although he has taken some water today and looks to have perked up a bit. He has a single comb and this has flopped over and has gone a bit bluey in places. I also have a modern game bantam cockerel who has stopped crowing today (totally unlike him as he is a noisy sod)! :D .. I also have a wyandotte cockerel who sounds like he has a sore throat when he crows!!
I had a similar problem a few years ago and lost two birds very quickly.. anyone have any ideas please???

get him to a vets asap, not sure what it is but they could have eaten something they shouldn't have.
Just going to pop this over to the hen house rather than it being on here.
Staffies are softer than you think.

the problem with chickens is that they mask their illnesses very well and often they are very seriously ill by the time we notice. They could have an infectious illness so getting the worse on to a vets is the best way and then get enough treatment for all your birds.
Do you know if anybody near you has used rat/mouse poison or something like that as chickens love to eat mice. Also do they free range? Perhaps they could have eaten part of a plant that hasn't agreed with them.

Thanks for the prompt responses, i do let them out for a while each day but the wyandotte and his hens are in a totally seperate yard and have no contact with the others ( i have about 25 in all at the moment) I do have 5 light sussex  3 week old bantams and after posting on here i noticed two of them are quite snuffly. Obviously these are not running loose and are in a seperate pen in my outhouse under an electric hen. I have three young Anconas whom are close by and they are all fine.!!
Think itll be vet in the morning!!!
