Hi all,
        im new to this and would like to buy some chickens to keep on my allotment,ive got 1  10 x 8 shed that had chickens in before i took over the plot,and 1  8 x 6 shed that im in the process of adapting for chickens,ive already cleaned them out and i have disinfected them ready for the chickens.i live in doncaster i would like to buy probably about 18 hens maybe 24 depending on what they cost,any ideas about what i could expect to pay and as local to doncaster as possible please,many thanks

well ya sorted matey , go for a drive round the countryside and lok for farms with chucks mate ,. also check out the local livestock auctions  buy the poultry keeper magazine for 1 or 2 weeks . ( if you want to continue then its your choice ) and check the adverts for birds ,,, one piece of advice i can give you , start with an easy bird to care for , welsummers fit that bill as do buff orpintons. gain experiance  with them and then progres to more expensive birds . £ 4 a bird is what i would pay i wouldnt put my money into a hand that was trying to rob me ,the more specialised the breed  expect to pay more .. common farm yard mongrels are just as good as any other  stock ..  hope that helps  :D

try selby livestock auction, its on alternate saturdays, check their website. Thats where i will be getting mine from soon as ive built the run enclosure.

and don't forget, ex battery hens are only 50 each!!!
