Weeds etc...
« on: August 01, 2011, 14:08 »
Like most people, I spend some considerable time hoeing, hands and knees plucking and generally taking weeds out of the plot.

I only realised last week, that I know so few weeds by their names, even though they turn up every time I do a bit of tidying, and that's a shame, as there really are some beautiful wild flowers out there, and most of them don't have a handle...

I've got a handle for them.

It's on the end of my swoe!  >:(

I don't care what they're called.  :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

some of them are undoubtedly pretty, but most are a darn nuisance.

I have a lot of borage on my plot, just one plant left to set seed last year on next door plot, and now the whole site has it

I like this site  :)

Oh, I agree DD, but it took me ages to understand what 'fatten' was, (Dennis again) until I realised it was 'Fat Hen'.

Then I knocked all that stuff over as well!

Thanks for that link MoS, just found out that the weed I've just filled a wheelie bin from my garden is called herb robert
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh dear, I think it was a borage plant I planted in my square foot front garden a couple of weeks ago because I thought the flower looked pretty!

I spent my childhood learning the name of weeds. But then I did live on farms.

I was weeding today and feeling a bit concerned as they were smothered in hoverflies and ladybirds so I've left a few patches which I can  clear away later when the insects have left  :)

I know most of the names of the weeds just as I do the wildflowers as they interest me and think a healthy soil means you inevitably get weeds.

If lots of weeds mean a healthy soil - then I must have a healthy soil.  ::) ::)

That's the sort of response I was looking for CompostQ!

Yeah, they're a darned nuisance, but items like Borage are gorgeous when in flower, or a Pimms...

My borage look fantastic and are covered in bees the whole time. I have one of my many plants in with the lime green romaines, bright orange calendula and a deep red Empress of India nasturtium. It looks stunning!  I have loads of flowers on the plot this year that are all self-seeders.  I just plant the veg round them  :)

We have fennel growing wild, and like you, just let a couple go for a while, and work round them...

Silly really, as they really do take a lot of space, but this is at home, not on the plot, so it works!

One's over 6' tall...
