I’ve not tried it with normal summer onions before.  As a biennial the main issue might be stopping them going to seed.  Usually we cosset early sown ones to keep them growing steadily and kid them all they have experienced is one long spring and summer.

You might get some decent spring onions out of them, but if you leave them past that stage, you could risk them bolting.  Worth an experiment if the seed is leftover  :)

I planted mine? The seedlings about 6 weeks ago maybe a bit longer. Mixed results some look like they will be ready before winter. Some look like they need a winter to get moving.
I always fail to stop a few onions going to seed. The seeds come up but are to close together to produce anything more than the equivalent of spring onions
I use them as if they are sets, quite successfully. Planted some of them a week ago already on there way. They over winter okay but some don't bother growing while others are full size onions.
Alas I cocked up on the shallots I planted the large ones

Traditionally Boxing day is the day to sow seed Onions indoors but i usually do it New Years Day.
Damping off can often decimate onion seedling, it is a balancing act as they do not like it too cold or warm when they are small.
