Box hedges - new growth frost-nipped?
« on: May 03, 2015, 11:39 »
My box hedges that have taken years to establish had some lovely new growth coming on - then we had some recent frosts here. Their leaves have now drooped and gone almost a grey-green colour. Can frosts do this?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I haven't grown it myself but remember Monty Don on G W saying there is something called box blight - might be worth googling to make sure it's not that.

Googling images, I may have had box blight in the past but having just had a look at them, there is a lot of new growth coming whereas the problem leaves are almost a straw colour, so I think it was the frost that did it.

A lot of the box around us has suffered with box blight but there are other problems yours could have:

I hope it was just frost damage, sounds good that it is regrowing.

Thinking about it, I have a large area of box hedging and the ones that were affected didn't get the sun until later in the day so if it was frost damage, it would have taken longer to thaw.
