-
Crikey, we've not even started and I'm confused already :D
Are there any rules on what kind of pumpkins we're allowed to grow? I've a few on the go but nothing like those huge Atlantic thingies, in fact most of them are little 'uns :D
What are we doing again?
-
The winner will grow the biggest pumpkin rather than the heaviest.
There will also be a poll at the end for the prettiest pumpkin
I think it plain enough!
If you want to grow the biggest, you'll need a big variety. If you want to grow the prettiest - size doesn't matter.
-
I'll try and grow a pretty big one then ;)
-
Me Please
-
Me please

Just as an update, my Atlantic Giant are just showing their second leaves. A long way to go yet!
-
I will give it a go, although only soed mine last week.
-
Go on then ....... I'll give it a go :D
I'll have to take the seeds out of the packet first though  :nowink:

I would like to have a go as well, I will make sure my post count is up to 50 by the Autumn, most of my seeds are still in the packets, though that should be rectified by the end of this holiday weekend. :)

I've sown these too and I am new to pumpkins so don't hold out much hope. Still, I can tell that it's the taking part that counts isn't it?!
-
Five of the six AG have germinated. One is noticeably bigger already, seed leaves near double that of the rest, she's a keeper.
Totty
-
Just had an AG pop up today.....was starting to get worried
-
I'll sow mine tonight...
-
do you want to join the compy Kim50 - or are you just chatting about pumpkins?
-
Well I could chat about the 36 squashes that have all geminated ::).. but yes please join the comp
-
I thought I'd better check :D
-
Me please, just hope it is not a repeat of my previous two years of disaster
-
I'll have a go. Last year's were a complete failure, so hopefully it'll be better this time!
-
Me too. But still haven't got my seeds to germinate yet.
-
Put me down (on the list, not in a vet kind of way)

On behalf of my girls (their pumpkins) we'll enter. Thx
Off to a good start left my two and four year old to plant their seeds, one in each pot. Two year old put ten in one 3" pot :D
-
 Guess they need potting on sharpish ;)
-
Yes. Only noticed when they started to germinate in the 3" pot! :D
Hopefully we haven't given away the prettiest one :D they are very excited that their pumpkins are in a competition. At least they're interested in the veg garden now . . .
-

I'd like to enter too, please. I took 3 Rouge d'etampes seeds from the seed swap parcel for my youngest son to sow, and 2 have germinated, so might as well have a go!
Don't know anything out the variety though - is it a big fruited variety?
Also, if I win, does my son take the credit as he was the one who sowed the seed? :)
-
As my pumpkins are growing well I would like to enter please.

Yup- photgraphic evidence of how HUGE your pumpkin is, or perhaps just a pic of how pretty it is, if it isn't a winner size-wise ::)

Well done Shaun I have my first one set and its now just bigger than a tennis ball I'm really excited about it
-
I've got 1 flower on 1 of 6 pumpkins. :) grandchildren very excited
-
My first pumpkin is the size of an aniseed ball at the mo! But hey it's a start! :-)
-
My pumpkin turned out to be a courgette, so hoping one of the courgettes turns out to be a pumpkin!
-
 ^ ^
-
   don't know why I'm laughing I've only got 1 flower!!!!
-
How many pumpkins should you let set per plant. Should you limit it and pinch them out? Also how fast should they be growing I have had one since Monday now and it seems to be growing about around 4-5 cm a day  sorry for all my questions I'm a first time grower of everything not just pumpkins
-
Just back from allotment. My aniseed ball pumpkin is now the size of a tennis ball. :)
-
I have 3 plants the foliage is growing like mad and the pumpkins keep rotting :( I've cut back the foliage for a second time and have two golf ball pumpkins . . . I trimmed the leaves shading them and now hope the tree rats don't steel them!!!!
-
How are everyone's pumpkins doing?
I went to the allotment this morning and all our squashes have grown so much. We've a couple of pumpkins larger than footballs already. I know they'll not win this competition, but I am pleased with how they are doing. :)

It's very exciting isn't it  its my first time growing them I only have 5 set and I don't think they'll be monsters but I love watching them grow even my hubby who thinks pumpkins are the most useless vegetable ever does a daily check ::) my first one looks like its starting to go orange
-
:) I'm very pleased so far. 1 is the size of a football, grandson 3 ill be delighted. Several others of varying sies. I had to discard a couple which seemed to have gone rotten. :( Can anyone tell me why please?
-
I've let one fruit set, it measures 2ft from top to bottom, so half the circumference I guess!
Totty
-
Hi. My plant is huge. I would say about 4 meters long with loads of vines but the fruit keeps falling off. It swells to the size of a golf ball and then drops off. I am doing something wrong? Pls help
-
9 times out of 10 any squash fruit which fails to develop properly and rots/drops off has not been pollinated, even if it appears to swell a little beforehand.
Assuming you have both male and female flowers present at the same time you can make sure of pollination by using a small paint brush to hand pollinate (transferring pollen from a male flower to a female flower.)
Some say it's not necessary because the bees do it for you, but if they don't, they need some help!

Or if you haven't got a brush handy, just take off a male flower, tear off the petal to expose the stamens and make like a bee inside the female flower. It worked with my butternuts.
-
ok thanks for the info, il give that a go later
-
Gave the pumpkin a bit of feed today, it's thinned to just one and is growing rapidly. I'll take a pic tomorrow, anyone else got any pictorial updates?

Is there a prize for the smallest pumpkin?! ;) ;) ;)
-
These are mine few days ago

No, but there is one for the prettiest ;)
-
Well this won't be the prettiest, that's for sure. Cannot lift it now. Feeding liberally.
Totty
-
hi all, i think my pumpkin has finally work. i hand pollinated it like you said, now its starting to swell. still only small but its getting there.
thanks everyone for the advise
-
Ive got rid of a few to get two big ones. Loving how big they are getting :)

 Oh my word Bill......how much does that measure! I'd really like to know how big is big. I've never grown pumpkin before. I thought mine were quite large!
-
I have nothing and cant tell what is male and what is female
-
Was very excited to find this lurking by the water tank following my one week holiday.
Plot owners keep stopping to talk to me about her. I think she's a Galeux d'eysines, but my squashes all got a bit mixed up- if so, will end up salmon coloured and covered with silver warts, but isn't she lovely?- she's got quite a few 'sisters' on the way from the same plant, and I don't have the heart to remove any
-
I forgot to enter this year but here are my current beauties
-
FINALLY it turns out of my 9 plants, 1 is a marrow, 1 is a pumpkin, and the rest, sadly, all appear to be courgettes  I have some hope that 1 more plant might be a pumpkin too because it hasn't fruited yet, but honestly, half these plants were supposed to be pumpkins... Am hoping they'll be pretty because they can't compete with some of the whoppers I've seen!
-
Here is my largest one so far. It is a Boston Squash type.
-
Eres big John 5 days ago. He's drinking plenty.
Totty
-
Totty- please tell me thats a kids wateringcan... I'm like  wow
-
 Have you measured it yet?
-
It's over 8ft around, just. :tongue2:
Totty
-
 crikey! well done.
-

Totty
Wow!
Looks like the rest of us will be competing for the prettiest pumpkin now! :tongue2:
-
I always am - so nothing new there

I'm gonna start giving mine a makeover 'cos I think I'll have to give up on the biggest prize unless a miracle happens.
-
Well I was surprised to find this on my return from my two week holiday.
(http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff473/LeeRothman/Pumpkin2013-01.jpg) (http://s1237.photobucket.com/user/LeeRothman/media/Pumpkin2013-01.jpg.html)
Coin is a 2p for scale.
-
That is a beauty! Think mine has slowed down a bit now.
Totty
-
I was too late to enter and mine are slowing down too but here's a photo of my second largest taken yesterday. It's a Hundredweight but there are two on the vine.
-
Not sure whether you are referring to your second largest child or pumpkin, but it's still a great picture. :)
-
Second largest pumpkin, JayG! If talking about children he is my largest grandchild - age 6 - and very keen on pottering and poking about on his godmother's allotment where we are growing his pumpkins. Four varieties. His ambition is to grow enough for the school cook/chef to make pumpkin pie for everyone. I should have entered HIM for the prettiest!
-
My pumpkin is nowhere near the size of the pics I've seen on this thread!
The texture of the skin is very different too, sort of rougher looking than the pics.
Any idea why?
Thanks.
LL xx
-
A different variety? which one did you plant?
-
Will any squash qualify or does it have to be a pumpkin? I've got a very pretty sweet dumpling, but my pumpkins are ugly customers, unfortunately.
-
Winter squashes count as well ;)
-
 Oh my word Bill......how much does that measure! I'd really like to know how big is big. I've never grown pumpkin before. I thought mine were quite large!
They are bigger than largest shop bought ones, I popped down the allotment today and look and they all have gone really nice orange colour. I will measure them Sunday.
-
Will any squash qualify or does it have to be a pumpkin? I've got a very pretty sweet dumpling, but my pumpkins are ugly customers, unfortunately.
The words 'Pumpkin' and 'Squash' 'Winter Squash' are used interchangeably, any Winter Squash could be considered a Pumpkin and vice versa,
-
I'm out - the one and only pumpkin that I managed to grow has been eaten :( oh well, try again next year :-)
-
:( Bad luck Sweetpea

Aw, I should have entered my 'Lunga Gigante di Napoli' (Long Giant of Naples) winter squash. Its now about 26" in length, and its girth on the broadest side is also 26"! Still growing by the looks of it. 8)
-
but is it pretty?
By the look of some of the photos already posted, it doubt it would be the biggest

Looks like a blown up marrow. Not exactly the prettiest, and yes, looking at some of the pics, it isn't the biggest!
-
I ve been away from my patch for a good 7 weeks, I went for a look and the courgettes/marrows were enormous! I could see them from the road! So I rushed straight over to my pumpkins all excited and expectant........ There was one left and not much bigger than my fist  maybe I can disguise one of the marrows instead! :tongue2:
-
hi all here is a few piccies of my pumpkins shame about the slit on the yellow one, mysteriously appeared one morning >:(mmmm??
-
Wish I'd seen this thread earlier as I would have joined. I threw a seed in a pot and almost threw it away when it wasn't up after 10 days. neglected it a bit and then stuck it in the corner of my new allotment expecting the rabbits to eat it. They didn't and it's just taken :D I just left it to it and it's got about 8 decent pumpkins on it at least. Just need to find some pumpkin recipes now :)
-
Big John managed to get in the papers today! If you follow the link, the fourth or fifth pic in the article is me pumpkin givin a ride to our 'mouser'!

Well the time came to harvest the beast for the show tomorrow and here is our entry.
Its showing just over 44kg on the scales that's 96.8 lb.
Will get an official weight at the show tomorrow.
Me and the wife haven't laughed so much for ages when we were carrying it to the car we nearly dropped it a few times.
-
 Goodness gracious me! Well done on growing such a monster and good luck with the show. However, I'm a bit depresed 'cos I thought 1 of mine was large......now I know better :(
-
LOVE the photos, bravemurphy. Bu how did you do?
-
We had first for the pumpkin , we are all well chuffed :)
-
Hurrah :D :D :D
-
I hope everyone knows where their tape measures are - just a few weeks more growing unless we're really lucky with the weather ;)
Please show the measurement, with photo to prove it, by 31st October, when competition will end.
-
Well done, bravemurphy and family! Out of interest - what was the circumference? and variety?
-
we haven't measured it yet it was Atlantic giant.
-
Thanks, bravemurphy. When you can find a tape measure long enough If love to know the circumference.
-
Ok here's mine as of today. First noticed this one about 6 weeks ago. Circumference currently 53 inches. Note 50p on top.
-
Here is another from my plot. Different variety from first, this is a Rouge Vif d'Etampes I think. I first noticed this one about 2 weeks ago.
-
Got an 8 ft circumference....... 20stone ish.
Totty
-
wow - 8ft - impressive. Photo?
-
here is my biggest so far 57 inches round 25.4 kilos  I still have another big pumpkin growing, there is some very impressive ones on here.ill put some more with tape measurement on when oh gets back ;)
-
some more piccies
-
2 allotments: I'm equally amazed by your quality aubergine as well as the pumpkin! :D
-
thanks dbg :)
-
Thanks for all the circumferences. My grandson has one plant with two on it measuring 52 and 54" so we were wondering what the weight might be. In other words, will we need a wheelbarrow when we have cut it.
-
Mines doing well too, my very first pumpkin.
-
this mine from 10 days ago.

Wow shaun makes mine look like a pea , fun growing though.
-
So that is your secret, 2Allotments. Grow pumpkins in a comfy chair :D It does look very relaxed.
Do you let them have the TV remote as well?
-
i have 4 on the plant. was going to limit it to 1 per plant and try for a HUGE one but i was late pollinating it. The bee's didnt do their job. Cant wait for next year tho :D
-
Me too, mine might have been bigger if someone hadn't cut through one stem Will try jacko lantern next year.

wow - 8ft - impressive. Photo?
This was last week. It's slowing down now.
To get an idea of weight, there are some charts online which tell you how to take 3 measurements, you add these together, then cross reference your total n inches to the chart to give estimated weight.
Mine, as of now, measures, 61 inches over the top sideways, 65 inches from blossom end to stalk, and 105 inches circumference. 231 total means he is 269lbs in weight now.

Wow that's huge totty lots of pumpkin pie with that one.
-
Oi !! size isn't everything you lot, although those are some impressive pumpkins!
Here's my very dense Queensland Blue still growing, (worth £20 in the market according to my Jamaican plot neighbour '£1 a peg') but I've cut a Galeux d'eysines a few weeks back so she can develop her warts in time for her close up 8) what to enter....
-
Many congratulations Totty...that is certainly a whopper. :) However, I do have a very disappointed 9 year old grandson who thought that his (currently at about 50" round) was bound to win. Don't feel bad about it. He! he! I will have to make my own certificates for the plotchildren.......the biggest, prettiest, orangyist etc. etc. etc. 7 times!!!!!!
-
wow that's a big un totty.
-
Thats a beast totty. What variety is this - atlantic giant? Do you have a forklift?
-
Yes it's an Atlantic giant. I'll worry about movin it when it's stopped growing I reckon!
Totty
-
So that is your secret, 2Allotments. Grow pumpkins in a comfy chair :D It does look very relaxed.
Do you let them have the TV remote as well?
lol yes they love watching gardeners world hee hee

estimated weight 352 lbs

Please help me out by not posting photos of pumpkins on this thread - unless you have entered the competition.
It makes it difficult when I have to sort things out at the end - if I have pics from people who didn't enter.
;)
-
Sorry but I did enter it must have been at least 3 months ago. Ok won't bother any more.
-
Is there any easy way to tell when a pumpkin has reached the biggest it will get? And should it be harvested at that point or is it ok to leave on the plant? Thx
-
Squash and pumpkins usually start to change colour, the skin hardens up and the stem starts to crack/look corky. They can be left on the plant till it dies but I'd always bring them inside or cover if frosts are forecast.
The other thing to beware of are people who think they should have your pumpkin >:( Some were taken from our site last year :(
-
that is what im worried about. someone stole all my apples 2 nights ago too. just hope the pumpkin doesnt go missing.
-

estimated weight 352 lbs
There is no record of you having entered our competition, griff.

Looking at the two big pumpkins on display at The Harrogate Autumn Flower Show today - I dont think they were as big as some on here
-
I reckon I'll invest in some monster pumpkin seed next year. It's amazin to watch them swell day by day.
500lb target........

Rather than star a new thread on the general pages I thought I would ask the pumpkin experts here.
Today it is cold, damp, grey, windy and generally horrible here. I was wondering about throwing a blanket over the poor wee thing. :) I know that a plastic sheet cover will just encourage mould, but an old blanket would leave it in the dark. A bit like me. So light, or warmth, which is better?
I'm not able to get to the plot to unwrap it every morning and tuck it up every night. That would be taking things too seriously.
-
Fleece it or just leave it, unless frost is forecast ;)
-
I am not going to win :( I've tried I will measure weigh and post in the hope it may bulk up a bit! But my jack o lanterns that's are meant to be small are amazing :) and I have lots! Ian going to try much harder next year.
-
I'll put my entry in now as it isn't going to get any bigger or prettier. It is a winter squash which thinks it is a pumpkin and it is really trying hard ;)

Now the weathers turning I went and picked my remaining pumpkins and consigned the plants to the compost heap. So here are my competition entries. First off we have a group photo. The two long ones are 'jumbo pink banana' winter squash. On the right is a Rouge Vif D'etampes. The other 3 including the big one are 'Big Max'. Will post more photos below.
-
Here is my Rouge Vif D'etampes.
It weighs 28 lb 4 oz.
Max width 14"
Circumference 46"
-
Here are my 'Jumbo Pink Banana' winter squash.
The larger one weighs 17 lb.
-
They will make good eating :tongue2: The Rouge ones that is. The Jumbo's need help in the flavour stakes :)
Good pumpkins folks :D
-
Here is the largest of my 'Big Max' pumpkins.
Circumference 60"
Weight 76 lb 8 oz.
The plant this was on was massive and had 6 other pumpkins some of which we picked when much younger, others left on the plant till its demise.
-
And finally, here's a Crown Prince who was too shy to be photographed with his plotmates.
Weight 8 lb 8 oz.
-
Crown prince is about quality, not quantity :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:
-
My entry, not a winning size, nor the prettiest. It's an Atlantic Giant, my first attempt at Pumpkin growing, so pleased it made it to 39 inches or 990.59mm
-
Please note if you think you stand a chance of winning the biggest pumpkin - it is size and not weight we are measuring ;) and...........
Please show the measurement, with photo to prove it, by 31st October
-
That's what I've done.
-
Full marks for reading the instructions  but a few people, who posted before you, haven't ;)
-
How do you measure prettiness Mum?
-
I only gave measurement on the largest pumpkin I had. The other photos are for their aesthetic qualities.. hoping there might be a winner for beauty.
-
How do you measure prettiness Mum?
Members get to vote on the matter ;)
-
Just as well this person (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24507714) wasn't a member on here ...
-
Did they get planning permission to grow that?
-
Wow. that would have taken up most of my plot.
-
What a whopper
-
Did they get planning permission to grow that?
-
Ugly b8gger isn't it, quite scary
-
I think Guinness Book is out of date. 2009 lbs is the world record now?
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/ViewArticle.asp?id=175&gid=57
-
If the Guinness record people weren't there to check the weighing - then I don't think they will recognise it!
This one was even heavier
a giant pumpkin from the valley set a world record during a weigh-off at Morgan Hill in the South Bay.
The pumpkin, grown for 105 days in a backyard in east Napa, tipped the scale at 2,032 pounds

-
The article I posted referred to the UK record, not world record.
-
Everyone eeking every last inch out before the deadline.......
Totty
-
My two little pumpkins that eventually grew are the size of coconuts and neither pretty nor ugly, oh well I'll try again next year, until then it's soup time :D
-
Everyone eeking every last inch out before the deadline.......
Totty
We've seen the size of yours m'dear :D
Cut the last of mine today.
Are we only allowed one entry per category? All my babies are pretty
-
Like Peas LMPG, I neither have a big or a pretty one. :( :(
-
Are green ones allowed, not time to go orange now :(
-
Green, orange, blue- anything you can think of! are all allowed :D
-
My son in law took the grandchildren to the big pumpkin contest weigh-in at the York Maze today. If the UK record was broken there was a £2000 prize. It wasnt but the biggest pumpkin which weighed in at 486 kg got a £500 prize. It had been driven all the way from Hampshire!!
My 6 year old grandson got a runner up for his 21kg in the childrens section but the childrens winner was a 14 r old whose mother had a monster in the main competition
-
Well here it is as you can see the tape was just big enough.
Its going to make an awesome lantern on our drive on the night :)
-
Here goes then, ten foot around, the journey from the garden to the house.
Totty
-
Neigh on ten foot exactly

Gettin to its final resting place..

Well at least my daughter is impressed with it :D All I need to carve it out is a very sharp knife and a lots of spare time
-
I'll put my entry in now as it isn't going to get any bigger or prettier. It is a winter squash which thinks it is a pumpkin and it is really trying hard ;)

Give my pumpkin to a care home for the elderly, for there Halloween lantern will try growing butternut squash next year. :)
-
Here is my Galeuxd'Eysines, she is the most lovely salmon colour (earlier this thread there is a photo of her in her teens) but like some of us of a certain age  she's got the warts of a life well lived, but it's what's inside that counts.
-
If I'm allowed to enter 2 I'd like to share my favourite Queensland blue with you, she's 8kg and still deepening to the steel blue. I just love the shape of these squash.
-
174 cm, or 68" in old money
-
174 cm, or 68" in old money
That's exactly my height!
-
My 48" pumpkin has to be withdrawn as others have beaten it. Well done to them. :) Can't wait for next year, I'm really going to try hard  However, I do think this one is quite attractive. What do you think? (It's a jack o' lantern now!)
-
My pretty pumpkin ......

Last chance for entries today!

Good luck everybody!!!!! :D
-
Having trouble getting my picture small enough for some reason, so no pics from me. Definitely not the largest and nothing very pretty. However I am very happy with my 3 Boston squashes
-
The winner of the competition is Totty with 120ins
in 2nd place was LeeR with 82ins,
and in third place was gremlin with 68ins.
Well done to all :)

Well done everybody!
Totty, do you know how heavy it is? I can see it might be difficult to get it on the scales though! ;)
-
Thank you! Using a measurement/weight chart it's about 23 stone ish. Felt heavier though!

Well done to all, v impressive pumpkins - I'm jealous! My only one was of similar size and shape to a rugby ball and the skin a bit slug munched so not pretty at all  I will be trying harder next year ;)

Well done Totty and everyone who entered :D
-
Congratulations, was it one at work or at home?
-
Grew it at work. My home garden doesn't have room for a rambling giant, and the allotment is reserved purely for onions and potatoes.
I'm lucky to have the extra room to experiment I guess. The pumpkin was a huge talking point for the guests and visitors so next year I'm going to dedicate a whole border to giant veg. Should be fun.
Totty
-
I'm glad to hear your lovely ob carries on next year. Let us know when your open day will be and well done on the win! :) :)
-
8) well done Totty on all that watering and feeding. He's a biggun alright. Pleased so many visitor people got to share the in the joy of pumpkin growing :D
