Food colourant?
« on: November 12, 2012, 20:30 »

Anyone know wher to get a decent food colourant?

The ones in the shops seem to be a bit 'wishy washy'.

We used loads in a cake mix ( several layers of different colours) yet....

Blue became cyan

Red became pink

And purple turned a funny brown.

The only one that was successful was the yellow, only because I think it was not 'fighting' with the yolks' colour.

The liquid food colourants are far too wishy washy, you need to find a good cake decorating shop or go online for one and get more concentrated gel food colourants. :)

Sugar flair do a really go selection of colour paste concentrate, you only need a small amount but the colour is really vibrant. It can be brought on line. It's also really go in buttercream as it does not change the constancy on the cream but gives really good colour.

Hope this helps

Has anyone else noticed that now they don't sell cochineal as the red food colouring - the replacement has beetroot in it, it only makes a sludgy pink rather than a nice girly pink  :(

So yes, I have to buy online to get the colours I need. As usual ebay have a good range - colours and precoloured ready to roll fondant icing/sugarpaste  :)

Probably because of the way it is made. And it is not suitable for vegetarians so shouldn't be used commercially without stating it's made from insects.

Anyone interested.....

I know that  ;) - but wouldn't you think that they would replace it with a food dye that supplied a similar colour

Think of all the little girls that end up with sludge pink icing on their birthday cakes, because mum didn't know it had been changed  :nowink:

Ah that explains why my butter icing turned out a horrible orangie pinky colour and not the lovely girly pink that I had expected to get.  Will have to go on line and see what I can get.

I know this post is a bit old. However, I use colouring paste from this shop:  LINK

It's very close to me but you can also order online.

Thanks for the link.  ;)

But I'm having problems loading it, only half the page wants to come up, and not showing many pictures etc.

Any ideas...?

Try it now Goldfinger. There seemed to be two copies of the url, I was getting it to load OK by clicking near the beginning and it still loads the same page now I've removed one copy.
