The hen of mine that lays soft shelled or weird shaped has the same to eat as all the others.  Good quality layers pellets, some freeranging and a tiny amount on mixed corn.  Crushed oyster shell and grit is always available for them.  I really think that it is her breeding that the problem lies, she is a Bovan Goldline and was bred to lay the optimum number of eggs.  If she was on commercial premises she would have had the chop by now.

It was only strange today because it was massive!

One of the 5 eggs I picked up this morning was twice the size of the other 4!!

Bought 3 new POL girls at the weekend. 2 laid perfect eggs on their 2nd day home but the 3rd one was obviously trying to get the hang of it, this is her first egg. When I broke it open there was a yolk and what looked like part of an intestine about 3 ins long. She's been laying proper ones since then, but it did turn my stomach a bit seeing the contents of this odd one.

one of my hens often lays a very large egg,ive got 3 RIR which are about 8/9 mths old and a 2yr old blackrock ive also 4 younger hens but they only just pol and only been there a week so not one of them im pretty sure it not the blackrock cos her eggs so distinct compared to RIR so am assuming it one of the RIR its only occasionaly i get one but my it must hurt ,i left todays eggs up lottie as i was unable fetch em nome but tomorrow ill post a pic of it

I had 2 pointy eggs yesterday.

Normally our girls lay lil' chubby eggs, pointed at one end (normal, effectively) but these are long and pointy??

And the darker coloured one is a biggie

good link there, although a lot of the misshaped/soft shelled/shell less eggs can also be due to the hen at the end of it's laying cycles where it's stock of calcium has been depleted

here is a photo of a wind egg (aka fart egg, witches egg, practise egg) alongside a normal egg laid by the same hen, as you can see it has a greater concentration of colour pigmentation.

I sometimes get strange eggs from my chickens. I found it can vary depending on the weather and diet. It's also important that they have enough space to roam, if they are too close together some chickens can become stressed.

Hello readers,
This evening, about 8pm I went to usher my three chickens from the garden (free ranging) and put them into the cage before tucking them up in bed in the coop.
So what! But one hen was reluctant to come and kept slowly walking away from me.
I eventually caught her and put her in the cage, soon after, she laid an egg with a very thin shell like jelly.
The other two hens went to it so I removed it.
Now the question is why lay another egg, as she laid an egg this morning about 8am?
So why another one in 12-13 hours? Will she lay again as usual tomorrow morning?
I do go on a bit.

Just a note. My chicken did lay another perfect egg the following morning about 8:30.
All is well since then. Guess just a blip.

I don't know what caused the odd jelly shelled egg, but it seems it was a blip and all is well.  They do like to keep us guessing don't they
