Title: Egg withdrawal.....how long?
Post by: cathangirl on May 06, 2009, 14:26
My hens have been on medication in their water: tomorrow last day of 7, so am wondering how long after that before safe to start using the eggs again.  Does anyone on here know, please?
OH reckons that the anit-biotics should be out of their systems very quickly with the amount of poo they do!

Two weeks after last dose is usually recommended by vets.  What did your vet tell you ?

Thanks very much, Aunt Sally,
Vet didn't mention at consultation, but I rang and asked as soon as I remembered that I hadn't asked her.
All she said was, "Probably would not harm you, but not recommended to use them".

I'm pretty certain that the antibiotic residue in the eggs would do you absolutely no harm - unless you have an allergy to the antibiotic.

The reason the egg withdrawal time is given is because low doses of antibiotics eg. from the eggs, can cause bacteria inside you to develop resistance to that antibiotic.  Bacteria resistant to antibiotics are not at all desirable in the larger scheme of things.
