Seed Potatoes
« on: April 16, 2012, 19:53 »
Can anyone help. I read the two books off this site, month by month veg growing and the allottment guide. It is my first year. I bought second ealies, chitted them and planted them. At the same time I bought main crop but didnt chit them because they weren't going in yet. They grew translucent shoots which where said to be no good in the books mentioned afore. So I removed them, put them in the shed but no growth. Have I killled them?

They should still grow further shoots --- give them a couple of weeks in a frost free, light place and see

It is hard to completely kill them

Thank You. They have been in the shed window for about two weeks, but no signs of growth. Do you still suggest the same?

#If I have to buy new which is getting late, I presume these translucent shoots will be ok?

Does anyone else have a view on this. Should I persevere with the potatoes in the shed and give them another chance or should I buy some more and start again?

Stop faffing about. Do not bother to try and chit them at this stage. Just plant them and they will be fine.

I dont chit my maincrop spuds at all because theyre in the ground for ages-farmers dont chit ANY spuds and get great yields from them.
There is research that questions the value of chitting spuds at all.
Rubbing the chits off your maincrop will not have killed them.
Get em in the ground-theyll do you proud!

I put some maincrop in yesterday (maris piper and king eddies). When I bought them they had a mix of nice short stubby dark chitts and some longer paler coloured ones so I rubbed the longer ones off and bunged them in.....I didnt chit at all last year  and got a nice crop off all my spuds.
