Can I reuse last year’s tomato grow bag?
« on: March 09, 2024, 10:40 »
Hi all
I had a few mobility problems last season when I should have removed my used tomato grow bags  to the plot. As a result I have several bags outside my conservatory and am wondering what to do with the soil. As I avoided blight I’m pondering whether I could use the soil this year in pots boosted with chicken manure?? Could I use these pots for tomatoes or do you think I should stick with lettuce etc.
Appreciate any thoughts especially from those brave enough to have done this.
Many thanks HH
Keep digging

I re-use compost all the time, but I do make sure I grow something else in it the second time round.  My used compost from tomatoes gets mixed with some fresh compost, plus some fertiliser and I use it for containers of bulbs and similar for the winter and following spring.  If anything edible gets planted in this mix, it is usually oriental veg or salads for the greenhouse.

It has never caused me any problems, but I think replanting the same crop might be dodgy.  Perhaps others have done this and can re-assure you on that one.

I agree with New Shoot. I have reused the compost as general soil improver or for something that doesn't need too many nutrients. But wouldn't reuse it for the same crop / veg family.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I agree too or I just use it as a mulch around the garden but revitalised with some chicken manure or blood fish & bone it would be fine for other crops or bedding plants
