Title: One thing I discovered this year ...
Post by: shokkyy on October 12, 2010, 14:30
was just how toxic tomato food can be. I was using some on the peas and beans, and accidentally tipped the watering can a bit too much so some sploshed out on top of some french bean plants. Within a week those plants were brown, shrivelled and dead. In future I think I'll stick to BFB for peas and beans :)

I regularly feed my peas and beans with tomato feed.  It's the right thing for them.

Tomato feed could not possibly have killed your plants shokkyy !

I'm certain it was that. It was a patch of plants in exactly the spot where I sloshed tomato feed. All the surrounding plants were green and healthy. Those plants had also been fed with tomato feed and were fine, but they hadn't had it poured all over the top of them. They might like it at their base, but they certainly don't like it all over their leaves.

Most odd.  You had probably made up too strong.  I use it as a foliar feed on my runner beans.

Was it a hot day? Water will burn leaves in bright sunlight. Add a few salts and the effect will be even greater.

The day might have been hot, but I always water in the evenings after it's cooled down.

Most odd.

Like Ant Sal I often give tomato feed to my peas and beans with no ill effects. Perhaps you got a batch that had been made up wrong...a bit like 3 bags of salt in a packet of crisps. (now I'm showing my age)

Am i right in thinking that the tomato feed packet says not to get it on the leaves but only apply to the base?

I did some toms on the balcony in a pretty large pot and had to bend myself up in a position that made sure i didn't spray the plant itself.  The only reason I can come up with for me doing this is if I was told not to on the packet, or was I just being an idiot?
