Let's talk carrots
« on: February 28, 2018, 04:51 »
It's been a while, so I am hoping there are some new strains of carrots that are more resistant to carrot fly, that being one of the biggest problems I remember.

Anyone know of any new varieties that have proven their worth?

I don't believe there are any varieties resistant to carrot fly, only less attractive (lower odour at a guess). The only way to avoid fly is through protection using fine mesh or fleece.

I agree. After years of trying all sorts of methods.. tall wall of mesh which blew down, growing alongside onions, which not only didn't work but the onions didn't enjoy sharing their space, marigolds, and so on, a nice neat, tightly stretched mesh tunnel is a guarantee of success. I bought some at a very reasonable price from an Amazon seller in Hong Kong... arrived in 10 days , 2.4m by 10m for about £16 inc p&p. Goes through the washing machine at the end of the season too.

(Liked it so much I covered my cabbages this year too and had perfect heads for the first time ever)

I tend to agree with what's been said I've tried many varieties including pelleted seed that seemed to be better for sowing but out of the sixvarieties we intend growing this season there are none that are carrot fly proof that I know of

as said a good insect mesh is the answer having had good size carrots not touched by the carrot fly i would never grow carrots without mesh but as you know field grown carrots never seem to get any problem from the dreaded fly why because there sprayed with something that iether stopes fly or kills it and its something the home gardener can't buy

anyway good luck with you carrots and invest in a good insect net  :D :D :D

The only ones I know of that are resistant to carrot fly are the ones under insect netting.

Let's not confuse fly resistant, with fly proof. There are plenty of resistant ones, but no proof ones. As others have said, a barrier is the only way.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
