Title: Best chickens for meat? And meat bird tips please!
Post by: pandora on January 13, 2009, 09:21
I keep a variety of hens for eggs, a few pure breds for egg colour (araucanas, marans, wyandottes) and a few hybrids for egg regularity. They are all looked after by the fabulous Mummy's Boy, my cuckoo maran cockerel.

I'd like to branch out into keeping chickens for meat. I know a few people here have done this. What is a good breed for this, and does anyone have any tips and essential knowledge for someone starting out? I plan on going on a course which is held near me on preparing a bird for eating, so I know what to do with it once I've fed them up!

Hi
There are two very good hybrid breeds available which have different merits but are very good, namely Ross Cobbs and Sassos.
If you want a pure bred meat bird that still performs well, then there's a breed called Ixworths.
